Summer joy

Reading Adam Wells’ article Dry cider for wine lovers in today’s Financial Times today (paywalled), I was reminded of a story that my late and very much loved ex-sister-in-law used to tell.

Then married to my brother, he had taken her to a wine tasting, somewhere in South West London. Not the sort of event that she much enjoyed.

The first wine to be tasted was white, dry, elegant. Round the table, the men, as she told it, all offered opinions. Knowledgeable, confident, very much a case of “I know, the others probably don’t.” None, however, did.

When it came to her turn, she simply said, “Cider. French. Probably Norman.“

Absolutely spot-on.

I miss her so much.
